Urban Center for Computation and Data

The Urban Center for Computation and Data unites scientists from the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory with educators, architects and government officials to capitalize upon the growing availability of city datasets and the emergence of urban sensor networks. The interdisciplinary collaboration will analyze and integrate those data sources and build complex computer models that can anticipate the impact of policy decisions, investments, urban development or other interventions on a city and its residents.

RDCEP brings together experts in economics, physical sciences, energy technologies, law, computational mathematics, statistics, and computer science to undertake a series of tightly connected research programs aimed at improving the computational models needed to evaluate climate and energy policies, and to make robust decisions based on outcomes.

Combining those tools and capabilities in different ways allows users to rapidly develop custom community-specific solutions.

The overarching goal of our Center is to identify the genetic and environmental factors that underlie psychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, and child & adolescent psychopathology. Our team develops and applies drastically new mathematical and computational strategies to infer causal relationships among genetic variation, environmental variables and psychiatric phenotypes.


CSGID applies state-of-the-art high-throughput (HTP) structural biology technologies to experimentally characterize the three dimensional atomic structure of targeted proteins from pathogens in the NIAID Category A-C priority lists and organisms causing emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Flash Center for Computational Science

The Flash Center for Computational Science is carrying out several projects, ranging from High-Energy Density Physics(HEDP) and Supernovae to Co-Design for Exascale. The common thread running through these diverse projects is FLASH, a publicly available multiphysics multiscale simulation code with a wide international user base. 

The US ATLAS Midwest Tier2 Center (MWT2), a consortium of University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Indiana University, has grown to become a leading computing facility for the approximately 3000 physicists participating on the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

modENCODE project

The goal of the modENCODE project is to provide the biological research community with a comprehensive encyclopedia of genomic functional elements in the model organisms C. elegans and D. melanogaster. modENCODE is run as a Research Network and the consortium is formed by 11 primary projects, divided between worm and fly, spanning the domains of gene structure, mRNA and ncRNA expression profiling, transcription factor binding sites, histone modifications and replacement, chromatin structure, DNA replication initiation and timing, and copy number variation.
