Mark Altaweel holds joint appointments in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska and the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago in addition to his work at Argonne. His interests include complex adaptive systems and social-ecological systems modeling and simulations. His current interest lies in modeling social-hydrological interactions in northern latitudes. This work investigates the resilience of communities and large-scale mining operations in relation to water systems in the Arctic.
Dr. Altaweel has modeled ancient urban pedestrian transportation and agricultural systems in the Near East. He has collaborated with anthropologists, geneticists, archaeologists, biologists, hydrologists, computer scientists, and others in these efforts.
Dr. Altaweel received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2004.
