The Exascale generation of supercomputers will help researchers tackle increasingly complex problems through modeling large-scale systems, such as nuclear reactors or global climate, and simulating complex phenomena, such as the chemistry of molecular interactions. Researchers at the Computation Institute and Argonne National Laboratory are part of four co-design centers helping pave the way for these powerful machines.

Around the world, cities are showing signs of old age. For urban areas, one of the first signs of advancing years comes in its circulatory system — the water infrastructure — as pipes laid underground over a century ago start to break down. Beyond the direct cost of repairing water main breaks and replacing the broken components, these incidents cause major headaches for nearby residences, businesses, and traffic. Last summer, Data Science for Social Good partnered with the City of Syracuse to help address this problem proactively by predicting where future water main breaks would occur.

The Computation Institute hosts a summer internship program for advanced high school and college students to gain exposure to research. Students are given a chance to participate in various research projects that share a common theme of applying computational and data science techniques to different scientific problems.

To better assess how climate change caused by human greenhouse gas emissions will likely impact wheat, maize and soybean, an international team of scientists has run an unprecedentedly comprehensive set of computer simulations of US crop yields.

For the past four years, the Data Science for Social Good summer fellowship has brought over 160 fellows from around the world to Chicago to work on data-driven projects with real world significance. They've used machine learning and predictive analytics to improve graduation rates, anticipate urban blight and water infrastructure issues, direct hazardous waste inspections, deliver targeted social services, and much more. Now, the program, run by the CI's Center for Data Science and Public Policy, is looking for fellows, mentors, project managers, partners, and funders for 2017, with applications due at the end of January.

Social science and public policy have always been connected, to varying degrees of success. In an ideal world, understanding the mechanisms behind social processes -- both good and bad -- would directly inform the creation of policies that promote social benefits and reduce consequences. But language, whether academic or political, often separates the two disciplines.
